The International Origami Internet Olympiad (IOIO; French: Jeux olympiques de l'origami [1]) is a non-commercial,[2] origami-themed International Olympiad launched by Russian origami master Andrey Ermakov in 2011. The event is seen by many artists worldwide as the ultimate challenge to prove their origami skills. [3] [4]

The IOIO is intended to globally promote origami[2] and is free of charge to every international participant. In recent years, it has become one of the most significant and popular events in the world of origami and featured thousands of renowned origami masters.[5] It also serves as a platform for discovering talented origamists[2] and gives each of them a unique chance to challenge the best origami masters.[5]
As of 2021, the IOIO has attracted numerous contestants from 60 countries and regions.[6] [7] [8] It is a bridge to facilitate artistic and cultural exchanges among various nations all over the world.[9]

In 2010, the IOIO started in the Russian Federation.[5] [6] In 2011, its first edition (IOIO I) was formally launched and attracted 109 contestants from 24 countries.[2] [3]
In 2015, there were at least 289 competitors from 50 countries at the IOIO V.[10] In 2016, 453 competitors from 53 countries participated in the IOIO VI. Faced with 15 difficult tasks, only 214 origamists representing 34 countries submitted their entries.[11]
In 2018, 550 contestants from 57 countries were at the IOIO VIII.[2] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2019 and 2020 editions were canceled.[12]
In 2021, the IOIO IX was held, featuring a total of 803 players from 59 countries.[12] [13]
Scoring and format [change | change source]
The IOIO is an online Olympiad. It has a strict control panel that verifies each registered contestant's identity throughout the competition so as to avoid cheating.[14]
At the Olympiad, a number of tasks are sent to each participant, and all models have to be completed within a month. Models submitted by origamists will be judged by The IOIO Jury.[15] One can win the competition as an individual or gain medals (gold, silver, and bronze) for each task. Each task scores individual medals with extra points. All participants from one country form a group, and medals are scored for each country as well.
Each juror votes individually; all tables then are summed. The winner is simply the origamist who receives the highest score. The tasks cover all fields of classical origami-like models folded from a diagram with a certain number of steps (from easy to complex), models folded from crease patterns, tessellations (mostly from CPs as well), corrugations, Kusudamas, 2D and 3D models, some with clear reference points, some without, models, where shaping is a main part of the final rendition. The final task always is a model that has to be created by the origamist him/herself matching a theme given by the Jury for all participants. Precision of the folds, individual expression and rendition, and quality of the photos are the main criteria for judging.[2]
